Venice | Family Travel Itinerary

There is no doubt we are ending on a high with Venice.

I hear of many people saying they don’t like Venice or that they think it is dirty. Obviously everyone has their own opinion but I think Venice is one of the most wonderful, beautiful and intriguing cities in the entire world.

Is it grunge- absolutely but it is filled with magic and charm, art and beauty.

Venice is for getting lost. Finding your way and getting lost again.

We dropped our car off and hopped on the Vaporetto ( water taxi) to our hotel San Teodoro apartments. It was a fantastic location right near the Rialto Bridge.

We didn’t have much planned for our 4 nights here we just wanted to get lost, enjoy the food and have lots of fun!

There is so much to see in Venice. We love visiting the Aqua Alta book store. Where there are lots of photo ops. Last time we were in Venice it was November and we got to see the Aqua Alta where the high tide means that water flows onto the streets of Venice. Temporary walkways are installed and it really is such a sight to see the city slowing sinking. The book store though has lots of books piled into the gondolas, so when it does flood they are kept safe and floating.

We walked passed Cafe Florian, one of the oldest cafes - we opted not to sit down and have a $30 coffee though.

When in Venice you must get cicchetti - These are little bits of food that pair perfectly with a good drink! Think of them as tapas. We indulged in them everyday along with a few aperols.

Another must try is the Tiramasu from I Tre Mercanti. They do a traditional and pistachio - both are wonderful. Tiramasu has never been a favourite dessert of mine but theirs is just wonderful. The girls loved watching the chefs at work too.

We indulged in a Peach Belini at Harrys bar which is another famous landmark in Venice. Visited by lots of famous people it is known for being Ernest Hemingways favourite bar.

There is so many wonderful places to eat in Venice. If you are looking for an affordable and delicious takeaway Pasta to Go is a must eat! They do quick and easy pastas and they taste better than some of the restaurants we went to. Make sure you was it down with some gelato from “gelato Artigianale dal 1985”

On our previous trips to Venice we had done the bridge of sighs tour which was wonderful and I highly recommend it if its your first time in Venice.

Whilst in Venice I captured some beautiful couples during some early sunrise sessions. For the best photos of and around landmarks I highly recommend making sure you wake up at sunrise. The sunset is late in Italy and most people eat at 8/9pm in the evenings so it makes the early mornings very quiet. Perfect for your photos!

We did venture out on a day trip that took as to Murano, Burano and Torcello. We had been before on one of our previous trips and had a great time. Murano is famous for its glass blowing and we watched a demonstration and the girls brought some little glass earrings. Torcello has a beautiful cathedral and Burano sells lots of lovely lace. Each town is beautiful but you may have seen Burano before in photos it is famous for its colour Fishermans houses.

A souvenir we can never go past in Venice is a mask from LA BOTTEGA DEI MASCARERI. Every trip to Venice Jesse purchases a mask from Sergio. He makes the most beautiful and authentic masks. I couldn’t go paste getting myself a pair of Piedaterre velvet slippers. They are famous in Venice and honestly the most comfortable shoes. I have worn them to death since our trip. Another wonderful gift to get loved ones in Venice is paper. There are so many beautiful paper and journal stores in Venice.

We couldn’t not go to Venice and treat the girls to a gondola ride. They loved it of course.

Some of our other favourites eats in Venice are:

  • Suso Gelato (gelato)

  • Pasta to go (affordable takeaway pasta

  • Farini (pizza focaccia, croissants, coffee)

  • Illy cafe (ice coffee frappe)

  • Tre Mercanti ( Tiramisù)

  • “gelato Artigianale dal 1985” (gelato)

  • Antico Forno ( PIZZA - YUM and super affordable)

  • Barco Al Ravano (cicchetti)

I hope you loved this very quick blog of our Italian holiday series. We loved giving you a little insight into some of our favourite places to eat, stay and explore.

Love + Light,
